"I find art in the details of everything...the little details..."
When talking to lyrical mastermind Kudos, it's apparent this man immerses his mind in rhyme. From the day he was first shown Hip Hop music at the age of 12, he was inspired to give it a go. His brother helped him hone his writing skills, and his father to polish performance art. Adulthood brought the freedom of inclusion into the wider music scene and from there his world flourished into the professional nature of the industry. Having integrity to lyric was something taught early on, "What are you saying? You gotta say something." his brother taught him. This was important in forming the basis of knowledge to improve from just having a flow to move into that next level. When I asked Kudos where he drew his inspiration from, he explained that he was very blessed to be able to find inspiration from many things and being able to tie concepts together to intuitively to make magic.
I asked him to explain...
"There's a certain type of mind that can see the art in things; I see art in the details of everything, everything is very unique, when you look at the little details the beauty is there. The art of connecting to source gives inspiration, I feel it's very spiritual. The art of rhyming is very mental, and the art of delivery vocally, is very physical. Where my mind is now, I can write very intricate structures intuitively. At first you start rhyming and things come out, and you have an interesting story; then you start to think about concepts and specifically try to angle what you're writing about. Say if I'm down, and I'm writing about that problem, I'll get to a certain line and I'm stuck thinking 'what rhymes with that what rhymes with that' and there isn't really any meaning to that line yet, then I'll get that rhyme and I'll be like...oh shit...I wasn't actually searching for that, just a rhyme, but I tried all these different things, and that word fit, then I end up with what is actually a quite profound message that I didn't necessarily have that wisdom about, but it was more given to me through coincidence of having a certain mind that works in rhyme."
"There's many things that inspire me, but I just love the art of rhyming; the patterns, I look at it like a puzzle and you're just creating this mosaic."
After hearing about Kudos delivering a workshop, I asked him how he became involved with facilitating these inspiring community gatherings and how it ties in with his career.
"So I've done workshops before but it's always been other people running them and I've been a helping hand. I did my first workshop just recently at Woodford...I was nervous as shit! I had an hour to fill, I got up and spoke for two minutes, looked at my watch, two mins, I was like 'what do I do now?' I ended up winging it and was really scared and didn't think it was going really well; but everyone seemed to extremely enjoy it and I got some really good feedback. Some of the people that were there, run this thing called 'Ruckus Slam' which is a poetry event in Brisbane and they, along with QLD Poetry Festival host these events. I'm still learning why I'm doing it, but I've always wanted to give back and I really like sharing this. I really like the idea that you get into a room full of people, have a good time, and one person will actually change someone's life. I got sat down on the right day, at the right time, with the right song and it changed my entire life. I love sharing and inspiring other people with what I do and to be honest, the best way to learn is to teach."
The "Give" EP Tour with DJ Lickweed, finishes up on April 22 at Yemaya Festival VIC. Kudos has a new EP in mixing due out later this year and an album on the horizon.
"The fact is, that our lives are changed by the smallest details, so something as insignificant as sitting down talking to you passionately about something; it can change your whole life."
